Nineteen new trees have recently been planted in the Arboretum. Ten varieties of Acers now feature on the far side of the lake, with an emphasis on introducing a coherent group with good autumn colour. Two unusual varieties of birch, a Black Tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica) and a Katsura (Cercidiphyllum japonica) which smells of burnt caramel in autumn, have been planted near the new kissing gate. Three varieties of Catalpa have also been planted to the South of the large tree ring and three Thujas are now in place to improve the North side of the small tree ring that has formerly been suppressed by laurel, now removed. The plants were all supplied by Hilliers.
